I’ve learned a few key lessons while on my initial sailing adventures, so I decided to start collecting them here. I plan to update this page as I (inevitable) learn more.
- Kelp and motors are not friends, even if it looks like they are hugging.
- Winches expect lines to be wound from the bottom to the top. Ignore this at your peril.
- When using a winch to pull on a line, if at first you don’t succeed, do not just keep try, trying again.
- If sinking isn’t your thing, automatic bilge pumps are amazing.
- Solar panels don’t work nearly as well when they are folded up in the cabin of the boat or when it is starting to get dark and the phone you are using for navigation is at 2%.
- You may think think sea lions look cute, but in reality they are mean. Don’t mess with them.
